THE FORCE OF CLAY
An ode to the clay craft visionary, and a tribute to aesthetic revolutionary, John Mason’s “Geometric Force” objects are ornamented in Gagosian’s uptown gallery space in NYC. And it’s awe inspiring!!
The late explorer-sculptor and ceramic embellisher perfected his artistry seizing modular forms and ceramic objects, while balancing the tensions between the raw energy and geometry.
The craft master visionary, who in the early days begun hand shaping clay and ceramic into large wall reliefs and mesmerizing objects, experimented throughout his career with different fabrications and firing techniques relying on mathematical precision and geometric patterns. Known for his large-scale abstractions, mysterious free-standing squares and rectangles, Mason embodied recognizable innovative technique that forever transformed traditional ceramic studios into avant-garde mind-blowing sculptor workshops.
At Gagosian we can witness one more time the brilliance of the late artist and explore different shapes and forms from his early career to his recent death. Mason’s conceptual, ceramic glazed arrangements in shades of blue, jade and earthy tones propagate visual geometric wave transmitting the energy and the symmetry: “But the thing about symmetry is it’s invisible. It does not proclaim itself. It’s there, you know, and it has a structural reality”. Check it out…
