SASHA GORDON’S AVATARS AT ICA MIAMI

art

The young and immensely talented artist Sasha Gordon is taking us to a new cosmos of surreal art with her exhibition ‘Surrogate Self,’ while playfully exploring the complexity of the bodily experience, self-image, and a vast array of emotions over at the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami.

Without a doubt, Alex Gartenfeld, Irma and Norman Braman Artistic Directors, should be proud of their impeccable curation of the first solo museum presentation for the New York-based artist.

Transforming into animal, botanical, and geological phenomena, Gordon enacts the process of objectifying bodies. She uses these large-scale, colorful avatars to examine her own experiences of alienation, vulnerability, anxiety, and chaos, while also prompting us to question reality, human connection, and social norms.

Sasha combines great weirdness and sweetness in the most original, dreamy, and dreadful way. She already stole our hearts, and we will be keeping an eye on her in the years to come.
