THE BEST ART FROM ART BASEL, HONG KONG 2024
A few essential and ecstatic exhibits, images emanating from Art Basel, Hong Kong.
As we embark on the countdown to the opening of the Venice Biennale, we made our way to our beloved Asia’s Harbor City to explore the cultural offerings of Art Basel – Hong Kong. From the Hong Kong Convention Center and its expanded exhibition sections 'Encounters' and 'Kabinett', to the rando fairs, satellite shows, offsite large-scale installations, screenings, and art talks, this year's edition brought together 243 top galleries from 40 countries.
From the massively scaled interactive poetic installation Continuous by the Japanese collective teamLAB at Tamar Park, to Wolfgang Tillmans' return to the fair with "The Point Is Matter" at David Zwirner, Louise Giovanelli's Asia debut with luminous figurative large-scale paintings 'Here on Earth' at White Cube, and Yang Fudong’s new black and white film screening 'Sparrow on the Sea' at the M+ museum, the festive expo is an all-out art machine.
Not to miss: Haeuge Yang’s majestically surreal sculptures "Contingent Spheres”, Li Wei’s "Once upon a time" featuring six life-sized child mannequins portraying world leaders as seven-year-olds (including Vladimir Putin, Angela Merkel, and Donald Trump among others), Andy Warhol’s 'Long Shadow' opening at Gagosian, Kingsley Ng’s 'Esmeralda' textile façade at the iconic Peninsula Hotel (our premier desert destination), and, of course, Hauser & Wirth's new 10,000 sq ft gallery in Central (the talk of the town), showcasing Glenn Ligon’s first solo exhibit in Hong Kong.
We lensed some lovely works below. Welcome to the wonderfully weird and tropical playground of the art world. Behold Art Basel, Hong Kong 2024.
